The Bundschu Family
Gundlach Bundschu, Sonoma Valley
Gundlach Bundschu Winery is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. Six generations of family winegrowing, combined with the commitment of the Bundschu family to Sonoma County and Sonoma Valley, made us look no further when seeking a family to serve as honorary chairs for Sonoma Wine Country Weekend.
As honorary chairs, the Bundschu’s will serve as winery spokespeople for the event, as well as host a special Gundlach Bundschu Winery 150th Anniversary Dinner on Saturday, August 30. Jeff Bundschu, President says that the Sonoma Wine Country Weekend is a benchmark event for the Gundlach Bundschu’s anniversary celebrations as well as an expression of the abundance of Sonoma wine country living. “It’s an event that really represents what we -- and Sonoma County are all about – world-class wines, community, and just a flat-out great time.”
For nearly 150 years—since buffalo roamed the plains, and through an earthquake, Prohibition, beat poetry and disco—Gundlach Bundschu has produced high-quality Sonoma Valley wines. Jacob Gundlach purchased the Sonoma property he named Rhinefarm on March 12, 1858, and since then six generations of the family have watched the sunrise from the same place, walked their children along the same paths, and made a living tending the vineyard and producing fine wines on this remarkable site.
Visitors to Gundlach Bundschu are always impressed by the charming tasting room set in the old
stone winery decorated with photos and memorabilia dating back to the 1800s. Longtime patrons of the arts, the Bundschu family not only hosts theatrical performances at the winery, but in honor of their sesquicentennial they have commissioned an original play, Towle’s Hill, that explores the personal insights of a multi-generation family business set against the backdrop of the history of the US wine industry and California itself.
In addition, to mark the 150th anniversary of the date Jacob Gundlach signed the deed for Rhinefarm, the Mayor of Sonoma presented the Bundschu family with an historic proclamation declaring ‘Gundlach Bundschu Day’ in Sonoma on March 12, 2008.
